"The Abyssinan Mass" will be performed by the Cleveland State University Black Studies Program's Jazz Heritage Orchestra and a local Community Mass Choir. In 2013, Marsalis and New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Damien Sneed's Chorale Le Chateau toured and recorded "The Abyssinian Mass." The Jazz Heritage Orchestra is only the second professional band to perform the piece outside of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. We are pleased that Damien Sneed, a musical virtuoso, will be coming to Cleveland to conduct the performance at CSU.

Everyone should experience this phenomenal musical event. Damani Phillips with Strings at Univ of Iowa's Riverside Recital Hall

Fri. February 5th, 2016 |7:30pm

Iowa City, IA US

On the evening of February 5th, I will be performing music from my 2010 album “The String Theory", which requires the collaboration of both jazz quartet and string quartet. All music on this performance was composed and/or arranged by me, and spans the gamut of jazz sub-styles - including funk, bossa nova, swing and hip hop. I’m pleased to be joined by pianist Dr. Ben Markley (jazz studies, University of Wyoming) and drummer Ryan Hayden (Julliard MM grad from NYC), both of whom appeared on the original recording with me. I’m also very pleased to combine forces with the newly-formed Des Moines string quartet “Quartet 515" for the performance. In addition to my original compositions, concert repertoire will include my arrangements of songs from the likes of Georges Bizet, John Coltrane, Billy Strayhorn, and Gabriel Faure. I hope that the performance will prove to be an evening of fun, enjoyable and atypical jazz music that is well worth the time to attend.
